Project Background & Objectives
House of Learning (HOL), a non-profit organization with its mission to help the underprivileged and the underachieved in Hong Kong, has planned to work with Society of Community Organizatin in providing a series of brain enrichment activities for their children. The proposed project, “ONE FIRE ONE BRAIN”has three main objectives:
a. to improve the self-esteem and self image of the underprivileged children through a series of self-improvement projects and activities
b. to help these children improve their academic achievements through a series of study skills training
c. to teach parents of target children effective parenting skills, so that they will have a clear picture and concept on how to teach and support these children at home during and after the project
It is hoped that this project will benefit 300 children.
Project Strategy
The project is conducted in four phases:
Needs Analysis – to set a benchmark on how we will train the children and help them to improve in the process
Parenting skills workshops – a series of workshops for parents of our target children will be conducted
Children Enhancement Workshops – a group of professional trainers will conduct a series of training for the children. The series include:
a. Study Skills
b. Personal improvement Series
School of Excellence – a group of mentors to guide & coach the outstanding & highly committed children to carry out and complete a meaningful and challenging project

Background of Beneficiaries (provided by SoCo)
1. Most of the children's families are low income ors live off CSSA
2. Parents are of lower education level and they lack parenting skills on how to help their children succeed in school
3. Most of their mothers are new immigrants from mainland China
4. In spite of their lack of education or financial resources, the parents of these children do care for them and are very willing and committed to support their children in their education
5. The children, generally speaking, tend to have lower self-esteem. Their needs range from improving their self-esteem, their social skills, their communication skills, and their English skills to a whole range of study skills.
Project Overview
PHASE ONE: Needs Analysis
The need analysis is jointly designed by Hong Kong Institute of Education. Data collected during this phase of the project will serve as a benchmark for the content and focus of the program. The data will also serve as a guide for evaluation on the effect of the program.
Contents:
1. Needs assessment: English level, interpersonal skills and study skills
2. Focus group interviews: parents
3. Individual interviews: children
Analysis based on the following areas:
1. Social Skills
2. Self Esteem
3. English Standard
4. Academic Level
5. Emotional needs
Method:
Data collected during this phase will be:
1. Quantitative – results collected from needs assessment analysis
2. Qualitative – results collected from interviews
PHASE TWO: Parenting skills workshops (PSW)
A series of workshops to be given to parents in the beginning of the program in order to orient the parents on the objectives of the workshops; and also to teach them the following skills:
1. How to manage their children's behavior effectively
2. Understand what children need from adults to foster their emotional and intellectual development
3. EQ training
4. Nutrition knowledge of how to nourish the children’s health
PHASE THREE: Children Enhancement Workshops (CEW)
This is the core of this project – the actual delivery of the subject matter to the children from SoCo This phase will include:
a. Regular study skills workshops for the children
– a series of regular workshops based on their academic needs will be conducted for the children
Contents:
1. Speedreading skills
2. Memory skills
3. English vocabulary
4. Listening skills
5. Notes-taking skills
6. Questioning skills
7. Wholebrain learning
This series of training will provide the tools and skills for the children to achieve at least a 30% improvement in their ability to learn.
b. Intensive workshops and Superlearning camps
These activities will be held in extensive holiday periods such as Easter, Christmas, Chinese New Year and the summer.
Focus for these workshops and camps aim to develop and strengthen the children in:
1. Presentation skills
2. Social skills
3. Mannerism
4. Emotional expressions
5. Self-esteems
This series of the training will improve the children’s performance in the above areas by at least 50%.
PHASE FOUR: School of Excellence (SOE)
This phase of the program will be designed for those children who have shown greater commitment and improvement. The School of Excellence will help to bring these selected groups to a higher level of learning and self-improvement. During this phase, the children will be assigned mentors, and together they will complete and design a project of their choice based on what they have learned.
